Probably a good starting place would be the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (3rd Edition) by authors Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. But during all these years S&W made some changes on this model. From 1961 S&W built the 27-2 up until 1980. Send me the serial # and I can date them for you or purchase the standard catalog of smith & wesson. No mention of a “Pinkerton Model” in my Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (3rd Ed). According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, your Chief's Special was made 1975 - 1976. (According to my Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson only about 10, 270 of these pistols were built.) After tests the French went another route, and the 547 never really caught on with revolver shooters or fans of the 9mm. The Gun Digest Books seems to do all that is promised. Never seen a reference to it in any of my S&W references, including the Journal of the SWCA (Smith & Wesson Collector's Association). It's easy to find, relatively inexpensive and has a good basic overview of the topic. The Smith and Wesson Standard Catalog that I have says the 27- were first built in 1961. I also own the 2nd Edition and I just checked it as well. The 9mm M&P Shield offers an 8+1 or 7+1 magazine capacity, while the .40 S&W M&P Shield is standard with either a 7+1 or 6+1 magazine capacity. Don't forget to polish your feed ramp!!
